Safety Precautions

This section contains tips on how to take precautions against balisong mishaps while flipping.

  1. Wear shoes while flipping. Your feet can easily get cut while flipping if you drop your knife and are not fast enough to move your feet. Shoes can help limit cuts on your feet (though the amount of protection depends on how good your shoes are).
  2. Tape your blade. Taping your blade for complicated manipulations (especially aerials) can help you learn the move without risking injury. Some balisongers recommend always using a live blade to avoid becoming complacent while flipping, but it's up to you to decide what method is best for you. note: Taping your blade does not protect you from the tip of the knife, which is as equally painful (sometimes more) as the edge.
  3. Use a trainer. The trainer is especially handy for sparring with your balisong since both the tip and the edge are blunted to help prevent injury.
